Brent Heyen, son of Janene L Heyen (Otoe County) has received an Extra Mile Award. Brent attended Chadron State College receiving a science degree in three and one half years. Later he decided he would like to be a teacher and attended the University of Nebraska for two years to get his teaching certificate. While residing in Lincoln, he was appointed chairperson of the fundraising committee for the Lincoln chapter of the National Federation of the Blind. While he was chairperson, the chapter raised enough money to provide matching funds to the Lincoln Grand Theatre to install MOPIX (Motion Picture Access Project) in one theatre. MOPIX allows blind & visually impaired viewers to hear a description of what is happening on the movie screen by wearing headphones. It also allows deaf and hearing impaired viewers to read what is being said in the movie via a small screen that is placed on the back of the seat in front of them. Brent is presently in his first year of teaching high school Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, General Science, and Biology at Scribner-Snyder High School I Scribner Nebraska. In addition, next year he will also be teaching Physics. |
